What is Multicultural Art Education?

artists who are marginalized
creating rich lessons with complex multiple personal meanings
questions the idea of a masterpiece
Whose masterpiece?
allows for students to internalize what they learn about the culture so instead of mimicking it, they incorporate it into their world view
effective art teachers discourage trite cliché symbols
complex identities
religious and ceremonial arts
gender issues (women)
families
children’s art
outsider and insider artists (prison artists, non-trained artists, artists with disabilities, graffiti)

Ownership Issues

Is it right to imitate what might be sacred or at least traditional in another culture?

Eurocentrism - The tendency to see European culture and history as the norm and all others as marginal. See also art history, ethnic, ethnocentrism, isms and -ism, lookism, and xenophobia.

Shouldn’t we teach that artists interpret and create meaning rather than copy that which is already created?

Authentic Voices

How do I teach art in a way that makes my students take pride in their own culture while gaining respect and appreciation for the art and customs of other cultures?

What is backwards design? (Governor's Institute for Arts Educators, 2008)
1. Start at the back - What are big ideas? Lasting concepts
2. What is acceptable evidence?
3. Plan learning experiences… Where to?
4. Start a theme/topic (nature)
5. What do I want my students to understand?

What Authentic Multicultural Art Education Isn't..

Inappropriate Examples:
African masks
Egyptian cartouches
Godseye weaving
Crafts that fill time but don’t teach concepts
Activities that don’t require thinking
Activities that tokenize a culture (for example having students do a lesson on totem poles and saying that you are teaching a Native American lesson) or have the students create stereotypical symbols of their native lands that reinforce stereotypes (potatoes for Irish, spaghetti for Italians)
